Louie โ€” Field Researcher, Hocotate Freight
Aspiring Gourmet Chef & Unrivaled Naturalist

Who is Louie?

Louie is a young employee of Hocotate Freight, assigned as co-pilot to Captain Olimar during the company's second expedition to the mysterious planet PNF-404. Quiet and reserved to an almost alarming degree, Louie has always harbored a deep, abiding passion for one thing above all others: cooking.

While Olimar meticulously catalogued the flora and fauna of PNF-404 in his scientific notes, Louie found himself contemplating an entirely different set of questions โ€” questions like "would this pair better with a beurre blanc or a reduction?" and "how many does this serve, exactly?"

"My grandmother always said: never waste an opportunity, and never waste a meal. On PNF-404, those two lessons became one."

The Cookbook's Origin

This cookbook represents the culmination of Louie's field research across multiple expeditions to PNF-404. Each recipe was developed through careful observation of the creature in question โ€” its texture, its diet, its habitat โ€” before being tested under field conditions with whatever equipment was available.

It is worth noting that Hocotate Freight's legal team has asked us to clarify that the consumption of creatures on PNF-404 was conducted strictly for survival and scientific purposes, and in no way constitutes an endorsement of eating alien wildlife on planets protected under intergalactic ecological preservation laws.

Louie has no comment on this statement.

Expedition Timeline

Pikmin (2001)

First Contact with PNF-404

Though not present on Olimar's first expedition, Louie's curiosity was piqued by Olimar's descriptions of the planet's bizarre ecosystem. He began quietly cataloguing potential recipes based on Olimar's notes.

Pikmin 2 (2004)

The Second Expedition โ€” Field Research Begins

Deployed alongside Captain Olimar to recover treasures and repay the company debt, Louie used every spare moment to test his culinary hypotheses. His Piklopedia notes, officially filed as "biological data," contain extensive recipe drafts.

Pikmin 3 (2013)

The Koppaite Era โ€” New Specimens

New explorers from Koppai arrive and encounter many of the same creatures. Louie, having remained on PNF-404 under circumstances that remain classified, continued his research independently and was able to study new regions of the planet.

Hey! Pikmin (2017)

The Parallel Expedition

A separate mission to PNF-404 uncovers entirely new regions teeming with creatures never before documented. Louie's network of contacts provides him with specimens and culinary notes from this newly discovered ecosystem.

Pikmin 4 (2023)

The Rescue Corps Era โ€” The Cookbook Completed

The most diverse expedition yet. Over 110 unique creatures documented. Louie, reunited with the wider exploration community, finally assembles his notes into the compendium you hold today.

The Meat Category System

One of Louie's most practical contributions to PNF-404 gastronomy is his classification of creature types by culinary category. This system, developed over years of field observation, allows any cook to quickly understand the general preparation approach a new creature will require before they have even tasted it.

The ten categories โ€” Bulborb, Invertebrate, Aquatic, Avian, Arachnid, Aerial, Fungus, Gelatinous, Mechanical, and Unknown โ€” are filterable on the Recipes page, so you can browse by what your kitchen (or campfire) is currently set up to handle.

A Note on Sourcing

All creatures featured in this cookbook were encountered in the wild on PNF-404. Louie strongly advises against attempting to recreate these recipes at home unless you have access to a full squad of Pikmin for hunting assistance, an ultra-spicy spray marinade supply, and the general constitution of someone who once ate an entire Sunsquish for breakfast and asked for seconds.

Louie's grandmother's rabbit recipes, referenced obliquely in his Piklopedia entries, remain his primary culinary inspiration. She was apparently quite the cook.
